Readiness for an Imminent Rapture
Question: When prophecy teachers say the rapture is imminent and we need to be ready, what does ready mean, and how do we do it? Is it just saved? Is saved ready, or is there more than being saved?
The term "imminent" means that nothing further is required for the rapture to occur. It does not guarantee that it will happen soon or within our lifetime; it means that the event stands ready to occur at any moment.
Readiness at the Most Basic Level
At the most fundamental level, to be ready for the rapture is to be saved. In this sense, readiness is identical with having received the gift of salvation by grace through faith in Christ alone Ephesians 2:8--9. Whoever has trusted Christ is complete in him and safe in him. No additional work, preparation, or spiritual attainment is required to qualify for participation in the rapture.
Thus, every genuine believer, however young in the faith, is positionally ready.
Readiness in Character and Conduct
At the same time, Scripture repeatedly encourages believers to live in a way that is fitting for those who expect to meet the Lord. While such readiness does not contribute to salvation, it expresses respect, love, and hope.
Being "ready" in this broader sense involves:
- Cultivating a life of holiness and integrity.
- Conducting our speech, work, and relationships in a manner we would not be ashamed of if the Lord appeared at that moment.
- Guarding against spiritual lethargy or worldliness that would leave us embarrassed at his coming.
This is analogous to preparing oneself for an important meeting or ceremony. There are days when one dresses and behaves in an ordinary, casual manner, and there are days when one gives special thought to appearance and demeanor. In light of the Lord's sudden appearing, the believer is urged to live each day with an awareness that he may, at any time, stand before Christ.
No Works Added to Justification
It is crucial to distinguish this practical readiness from any notion of earning salvation. Living in a way that honors the Lord's imminent return is an outflow of gratitude and hope, not a condition of being caught up when he comes.
Therefore:
Saved is indeed ready in the essential sense. There is, however, a further readiness of character and conduct that, while not required for salvation, is fitting for those who may meet their Lord at any moment.
